The Bible frequently invokes the idea that there is a ‘day’, and a measure, which will ensure that right and wrong can definitively be sorted out from each other. This may be a cause of fear and trembling for many. Who, after all, is without fault in their dealings in the world, and whose heart is without its dark corners? But it is also a source of hope, because the abuses of the ruthless, even if they meet no human check and leave untold victims, will ultimately face a reckoning. As the passages explored in these exhibitions show, justice is no frail human instrument; it is a divine certainty.
